What is Kanji?

Kanji, one of the three scripts used in the Japanese language, are Chinese characters, which were first introduced to Japan in the 5th century via Korea.
Kanji are ideographs which convey a specific meaning, word or idea.

Here are 2 examples of how pictographs are gradually standardized into the kanji symbol used today.

These are very simple examples but there are kanji symbol to represent all aspects of language including concepts, feelings and ideas.

By combining characters, more words can be created. For example, the combination of "kick" with "ball" means "football".
